Driving question: How can we improve reading comprehension to help learners become successful readers in and out of the classroom?

Grade: Grade 4

Project Descriptor:

This project is aimed at ensuring that Grade 4 learners move beyond vocabulary knowledge and word recognition to add meaning. When learners use reading comprehension skills, they’re turning words into thoughts and ideas.

Cookbooks, social media, instruction manuals — no matter where you look, we live our lives surrounded by words. That’s why reading comprehension is one of the most valuable skills learners can master. But it’s not automatic. Reading comprehension needs to be taught in the classroom to have a lasting impact, whether you’re teaching Kindergarten or High School English.

Many learners struggle with reading comprehension and understanding for a variety of reasons:

  • They prefer a different learning style
  • They’re not interested in reading or writing
  • They don’t have the necessary prior knowledge to understand the text
  • They have trouble focusing on one word at a time and skip important ideas
  • They’re working with a learning need like dyslexia that makes understanding written materials difficult

Every student deserves the chance to build critical comprehension skills. Keep reading for eleven strategies you can use in your classroom to help learners love reading!

This project sought to improve reading comprehension to help learners become successful readers in and out of the classroom for the rest of their lives, by employing a varied approach that combines technology, education, learner engagement and documentation.
