Driving question: How can our community support South African businesses to make the most of opportunities provided by our trade agreements?

Project Descriptor:

This question encouraged students to delve into the effects of international trade agreements involving South Africa on local businesses and the broader economy, fostering an understanding of global trade and its advantages. It invited them to think creatively about how their community might both contribute to and benefit from these opportunities while also promoting awareness of current economic policies and South Africa’s global partnerships.

Subject integration:

Students studied the geography of South Africa and its trade partners, including major trade routes and the logistics involved in exporting goods. They also explored the geographical factors that influence trade, such as climate and natural resources.

Students learned the importance of researching information, presenting findings and creating persuasive materials to raise awareness. Students practiced writing reports, giving presentations and engaging in debates about the benefits and challenges of trade agreements. Creative writing was also integrated, where students imagined the future of South African businesses under trade negotiations and wrote stories about the journeys of local products to international markets.

Understanding the historical context of South African trade agreements, including its origins and development, helped students grasp the evolution of international relations and economic policies. They also learned about the history of trade in South Africa and how it has shaped the country’s economy and society.

Students focused on the ethical considerations of trade and the social responsibilities of businesses. Discussions included the importance of fair trade, the impact of globalization on local cultures and economies and the role of civic engagement in supporting local businesses. They also explored career opportunities in international business and trade.

Students analysed data related to trade, such as calculating percentages of exports, understanding exchange rates and creating graphs to visualize trade statistics.

Technology played a role in understanding how businesses can use digital tools to access international markets. Students learned about e-commerce, online marketing and the use of technology in modern trade logistics.
