Afrikaans Teacher Senior and FET Phase (IEB)

Reports to: The Head of School

Core responsibilities:

  • Raising the profile of the Afrikaans in the Senior and FET Phase
  • Ensure efficient use of resources, creativity and innovation in lesson development and implementation
  • Ensure quality delivery of lessons and projects
  • Contribute to school development as a member of the team
  • Undertake duties as directed by the Head of School.

Key Responsibilities:

1) Quality of Teaching and Learning

  • To provide excellent teaching.
  • To support colleagues across the various subjects, and the school, to ensure excellent teaching delivery.
  • To support staff in achieving excellence in their work.
  • To deliver outstanding student outcomes and to support colleagues in achieving the same.
  • To keep up to date with national developments in relevant subject and teaching practice and methodology.
  • To advise senior colleagues on teaching and learning and to contribute to policy and practice across the school.
  • To raise the quality of learning at the school.

3) Staff Development

  • Work with and support and coach to junior colleagues and academic advisors as part of professional development where required
  • To develop the capacity of colleagues to produce excellent teaching and learning resources.
  • To design professional development activities
  • To work with colleagues in other institutions as appropriate

 

4) General School Leadership Responsibilities

  • Update the Head of School, other senior managers and the Governing Body on the effectiveness of the provision in your subject area
  • Lead by example as a teacher and as a manager achieving high standards of student attainment and progress, behavior and motivation through effective teaching
  • Challenge any underperformance within the team and ensure corrective action

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or Bachelor’s Degree with a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
  • At least 5 years’ experience in teaching Afrikaans in the Senior and FET Phase
  • IEB experience is essential
  • SACE registered
  • Ability to offer learning support in and out of classroom context
  • Willing to extend self in professional development
  • Clear criminal record
  • Solid understanding of enquiry based teaching and learning
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • A team-player with considerable interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate with the relevant age group
  • Flexibility and the ability to respond positively to change
  • Able to incorporate technology into teaching practice, show creativity and motivation in the classroom and work effectively as a member of a team

  • Create and deliver Project Based Lessons and ensure all curriculum delivery is in line with 21st century thinking/methodology.
  • Ensure efficient use of resources and encourage creativity and innovation in curriculum development and implementation.
  • Ensure that the values of the school are adhered to in the Language department.
  • Undertake such duties as directed by the Head of School.

Main Activities:

1) Quality of Teaching and Learning

  • Develop and administer Project Based Learning at the school.
  • Ensure that curriculum delivery is in line with 21st century learning.
  • Provide excellent teaching, assessment and recording and reporting of students’ results.
  • Support colleagues within the faculty of Languages, and the school, so that they may become excellent teachers.
  • Support other staff in achieving excellence in their work.
  • Deliver outstanding student outcomes and to support colleagues in achieving the same.
  • Keep up to date with national developments in the subject, teaching practice and methodology.
  • Raise the quality of teaching and learning at the school.

3) Staff Development

  • To act as a Critical Friend to teachers and other classroom based professionals.
    1. Provide support where needed
    2. Give honest and constructive feedback
    3. Share useful and well researched information
  • To support colleague experiencing difficulties.
  • To work with colleagues in other institutions as appropriate.

4) General School Leadership Responsibilities

  • Lead by example as a teacher achieving high standards of student attainment and progress, behaviour and motivation through effective teaching.
  • Serve as form tutor for nominated classes.
  • Sustain effective, positive relationships with all staff, pupils, parents/carers, governors and the local community.
  • Maintain clear expectations and high standards of professionalism.
  • Attend school events and activities as directed by the Head of Schools.

Qualifications and Overall Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or Bachelor’s Degree with a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
  • SACE Registration
  • A minimum of five years’ experience teaching in the Foundation Phase teaching
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • A team-player with considerable interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate with the relevant age group
  • Flexibility and the ability to respond positively to change
  • Able to incorporate technology into teaching practice, show creativity and motivation in the classroom and work effectively as a member of a team
