Driving question: How can we create an environmentally healthy environment?

Grade: Grade 3

Project Descriptor:

This immersive and empowering project saw Grade 3 students embark on a journey to explore the crucial question: “How can we help create an environmentally friendly community?” The project blended real-world problem-solving with fundamental mathematical and English concepts, fostering a deep understanding of environmental issues while promoting collaboration to reduce waste, conserve resources and encourage sustainable practices. The driving question served as a compass, guiding students to discover and implement strategies that helped them understand why building an environmentally friendly community is so important.

Subject integration:

  • English – Students strengthened their English skills through comprehension activities, shared reading sessions, oral presentations and vocabulary development, all centred around environmental themes to support both language growth and understanding of the project’s core message.
  • Mathematics – Students developed their skills in data collection and analysis, applied measurement concepts by comparing the lengths of different plants and tracking rainfall using a rain gauge, examined consumption rates and engaged in problem-solving activities to support their understanding of environmental impact and sustainability.
  • Life Skills – Students engaged in hands-on activities such as arts and crafts, simple experiments, composting, recycling and planting. They also went on a field trip to Victoria Yards, where they witnessed first-hand how sustainable living can be incorporated into our daily lives, deepening their understanding of environmental responsibility.
  • Geography – Students explored environmental sustainability with a special focus on the continent of Africa. Their field trip to Victoria Yards helped deepen their understanding of how geography, culture and environmental responsibility are connected within the African context.
