Project Descriptor:

Students collaborated enthusiastically to research, write and design a vibrant community newspaper. Each learner made a valuable contribution by crafting engaging articles, creating eye-catching advertisements, designing dynamic layouts and honing their skills in clear and effective written communication.

Subject integration:

• English – Writing formed the core of the project, with students practising articles, interviews and editorials while improving their grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and editing skills. They analysed example articles from newspapers or magazines to understand structure, style and tone, and were encouraged to develop their creative writing by composing short stories, poems or feature articles for inclusion in the newspaper. Additionally, when presenting the newspaper to their class or school, students practised oral communication and public speaking skills, enhancing their confidence and presentation abilities.
• Mathematics – Students created surveys to gather information from their classmates and used the data to produce graphs or charts for the newspaper, such as exploring favourite school lunches. They collected and analysed data from the school, including the number of students involved in extracurricular activities and popular subjects, applying basic statistics like averages and percentages. When printing or distributing physical copies of the newspaper, students also engaged in budgeting and cost analysis, gaining practical experience in entrepreneurship.
• Life Skills – Students learned how to communicate stories visually through photos, illustrations or comics, and took photographs of school events or created visual content to accompany their articles.
• History – Students researched and wrote about current events relevant to their school, and included articles on Civics and Citizenship that explored school rules, learners’ rights and responsibilities, as well as profiles of influential community members or leaders.
• Computing – Students used digital tools such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Canva and other design software to format and design the newspaper. They developed research skills by using the internet to investigate stories, verify information and gather images. The newspaper also featured articles on the importance of physical fitness and healthy living, as well as reviews of school sporting activities.
• First Additional Languages – Students practised writing articles, interviews and editorials while focusing on grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and editing skills. They also conducted interviews with teachers, especially grade 12 educators, about the sustainability of good results, producing bilingual articles as part of their work. Students learned how to communicate stories visually through photos, illustrations or comics, and took photographs of school events or created visual content to accompany their articles.
