Driving question: What would life be if we could journey seamlessly through time?
Grade: Preschool, Grade R and Foundation Phase
Project Descriptor:
In this interdisciplinary Foundation Phase Project-Based Learning experience, learners explored the theme A journey through time, guided by the driving question: What would life be if we could journey seamlessly through time?
The project was launched through an immersive classroom simulation where learners experienced a symbolic “time travel” journey designed to spark curiosity and imagination. Throughout the inquiry, learners investigated how people in the past lived, communicated, dressed, worked, created music and prepared food. They compared historical lifestyles with present-day living and reflected on how innovation continues to shape the future.
Learners engaged in structured discussions, guided research and creative interpretation of historical themes. They explored traditional music, instruments, clothing, communication methods and division of labour within past societies.
The project culminated in a concert-style exhibition where learners presented their understanding through music, drama, movement and visual art. The concert format transformed academic research into performance, allowing learners to demonstrate deep understanding in an age-appropriate, engaging and celebratory manner.
Through this project, learners strengthened foundational literacy, numeracy, creativity and collaboration skills while developing confidence in presenting their learning publicly.
