Driving question: How can I better my mind and body?

Grade: Grade 2

Project Descriptor:

This term, our Grade 2 learners embarked on an exciting journey of self-discovery through the project How can I better my mind and body?

They explored the connection between physical activity, mental well being and overall health while learning how to balance body and mind for success at school and in life. Through creative play, yoga-inspired exercises, breathing techniques and research into traditional and modern practices, learners investigated how strengthening their minds and bodies contributes to a better, healthier Africa.

They worked closely with teachers, peers and family members to design and build their own outdoor obstacle course — an energetic showcase of teamwork, creativity and determination. The experience nurtured collaboration, problem-solving and perseverance, allowing learners to grow in confidence while discovering the importance of holistic wellness and cultural pride.

Subject integration:

  • English: Learners developed listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through comprehensions, shared reading sessions and oral presentations focused on health, wellness and body awareness. They created short reflections and stories about ways to keep both mind and body strong.

  • Mathematics: Learners applied measurement and data-handling skills by collecting information about the dimensions of obstacle course materials, comparing lengths and using problem-solving to design and plan their outdoor games.

  • Life skills: Learners engaged in art, crafts and physical education activities that strengthened their motor coordination and teamwork. They learned about mental health, exercise, and the importance of healthy living habits through experiments and role play.

  • Geography: Learners explored how different African communities stay active and maintain balance through traditional games, farming, and community work, helping them connect physical wellbeing to their cultural identity.

  • African studies: Learners discussed traditional African approaches to maintaining health and mindfulness and compared these with modern methods, reinforcing a sense of pride in African heritage.

  • Technology: Using tablets and computers, learners conducted simple research and watched videos about yoga, exercise and brain development, integrating technology into their inquiry process.
